Middlesbrough community contacts and useful local links

Find the right council, connect with local activities and discover practical starting points for community life around Middlesbrough.

Start with the council for your address

Middlesbrough Council handles local services within the borough, including bins, planning and many parks and cultural facilities. Its website is the best starting point for reporting a council issue or finding the correct service, rather than asking a nearby business to pass a message on.

Teesside is wider than one council area. South Bank, Eston and Normanby are in Redcar and Cleveland; Thornaby is in Stockton-on-Tees. Stokesley and Great Ayton come under North Yorkshire Council. A Middlesbrough postal address does not by itself tell you which council is responsible.

Look close to home for regular activities

The borough's community hubs and libraries offer useful local connections. Acklam, Marton, North Ormesby, Hemlington and other neighbourhoods have facilities to explore, while Central Library is another starting point in town. Look for the programme at the place you can realistically visit regularly, rather than choosing only by a familiar name.

Meet the organisations doing local work

Community Ventures at The Greenway Centre in Thorntree runs community-led projects, with youth, learning and wellbeing activities among its work. Musinc is a separate route into music-making for different ages and levels of experience. Ask the organisation which current activity fits your interests and whether you need to arrange a place.

Keep useful details together

For an activity or venue, note its actual address, organiser and booking arrangements. For a local service, check the category and area in the directory. These small details make it easier to return, recommend something to a neighbour or find the right contact next time.
